VWA Architects was established by principal architect, Karen Werner, in Durban 2015. The practice comprises of a collective group of highly skilled passionate professionals ranging from professional architects, interior designers, architectural technologists and project managers. Our professional team focuses on providing our clients with the highest quality service and individual attention. We pride ourselves in creating good working relationships with each and every client whilst creating innovative and sustainable designs. VWA Architects has a collective 20 years’ experience which plays a vital role in the final outcome of our projects from budget management through to highly detailed drawing documentation.

Additions and Alterations

We can help transform your existing property into your dream home and more. Our services are not limited to only architecture but we are able to update your existing plans and assist in obtaining council approval. As well as providing interior solutions to spaces and helping in finishing and sanware schedules.

Our process

Our comprehensive suite of professional services caters to a diverse clientele, ranging from homeowners to commercial developers.

Stage 1: Concept design

On inception we meet with the client, and finalise the brief. At VWAA we like to create a visual representation of the brief through producing a mood board where we isolate architectural design elements which we aim to incorporate to achieve the client’s vision. We then will produce a detailed site analysis which will illustrate our site rights and constraints. This also allows us to discuss the relevant consultants that will need to be appointed, and we then also discuss management of the budget, contract and programme to ensure open communication from the onset

Stage 2: Concept & viability

VWAA produces a preliminary design which will demonstrate the spatial relationships of the design and the overall form and massing of the proposed design on the respective site. Materials and building services will be explored. It is at this stage whereby a set of concept drawings will be developed for presentation, discussion and approval with the client.

Stage 3: Design development

After the clients design approval we then fully detail the design and detail the drawings in order to illustrate the scope and complexity of the design, the materials and components. It is at this stage whereby the appointed team work together to finalise the logistics of the design, and we start to prepare for municipal submission.

Stage 4.1: Municipal Submissions

Prepare documentation in order to submit to the local authority for municipal council approval.

Stage 4.2: Documentation & procurement

VWAA will complete construction documentation and prepare documents to go out to tender whereby all offers will be evaluated and the build contract will then be awarded to the contractor.

Stage 5: Construction

We will assist in the construction of the project by issuing construction documentation, inspecting works on site as per the construction drawings and documents. VWAA will assist the client in obtaining all of the relevant construction certificates at the end of the build.

Stage 6: Close out

Provide the client with as-built drawings and relevant technical and contractual undertakings by the contractor and sub-contractors in order to obtain ‘occupational certificate’
